The CBC’s Andrew Change made an excellent video regarding this event. During my morning run on Sunday February 22 I saw a fire truck with sirens blaring. Shortly after getting home we heard of an OXXO on fire in the center of old Guanajuato. Social chatter and Google search led to a national news website with real-time updates on what was unfolding in Mexico.
We went for lunch as usual but quickly returned home as the city was put on alert by the authorities and the streets cleared. Fortunately the violent reaction was limited here to a few fires that morning. The city slowly returned to normality the following day as did most of the country. However, the likelihood of future violence is high and I am glad to be returning to Garden Bay on March 15.
